Distance Education
Extension and distance education incorporates credit-bearing classes taught off campus, liberal arts and professional courses taught at a distance, and regular academic classes offered online—all in response to the growing demand for non-traditional learning environments, as identified by the 2008 UNC Tomorrow Commission.
UNC Asheville extension classes have included core academic classes as well as special interest topics taught at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Asheville City Schools administration building, The Asheville School, Blue Ridge Community College, City of Asheville municipal building, McDowell Technical Community College, Montford Learning Center, Tri-County Community College, Mission-St.Joseph’s Health System, the YMI Cultural Center, Asheville Area Arts Council and Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Extension courses include professional development courses for teachers and Asheville city employees, lateral entry teaching licensure courses, writing courses through the Great Smokies Writing Program, and UNC Asheville academic courses through the Correctional Education Program (operated by UNC Chapel Hill).
In keeping with its commitment to develop distinctive programs that enhance its liberal arts mission, UNC Asheville stays abreast of trends in distance-learning technology. The Department of Extension and Distance Education seeks to:
- 1. Develop distance learning courses that reflect the liberal arts mission of the university and the quality of on-campus teaching and learning.
- 2. Provide access in response to educational needs of distant learners.
- 3. Provide opportunities for lateral-entry teachers to achieve their teaching certification as well as opportunities for professional development.
- 4. Identify and develop collaborative learning opportunities with community colleges, educational institutions, correctional facilities, and non-profit entities to expand access for distance learners.
- 5. Provide opportunities for individuals to further their educational achievements through online courses and for-credit community extension activities.
