Early Academic Alerts
It's important for students receive early feedback from their instructors about their performance in class. Though the pattern of grading differs in each course, the Catalog states that students should receive the results of at least one evaluation by the end of the 5th week of each course.
Midterm grade reports
Instructors are strongly encouraged to submit midterm reports for students who are not performing up to their potential as early as the first week of the semester.
The reports
Students may receive one of two midterm grades:
NA (not attending): the student never attended the course or stopped attending altogether at some point in the semester.
UP (unsatisfactory progress): the student has missed a significant number of classes or assignments, or is not receiving satisfactory grades on completed assignments.
Who has access to these reports
Once a midterm report is submitted, the student and their advisor both receive notice by email. These emails include helpful information and strategies that they can use to discuss how the student can improve their performance in class.
When issues arise about a student's academic performance, it's important to consider all aspects of their educational experience, so other faculty and staff (including Residential Education, the Honors Program, Athletics, Veteran Certification, and the Graduation Coordinator) are notified if one of their students receives a report. Students who receive midterm reports are also encouraged to talk with these other offices so that they can best understand the impact that their academic performance may have on other areas of their lives.
How you can get help
There are several resources on campus that students can use to ensure good academic performance. Students are first encouraged to talk with their instructor and their advisor if they receive a midterm report so they can discuss specific issues that are causing them problems.
Sometimes external factors impede students' ability to perform to the best of their ability. Some students find it helpful to meet with one of the following departments to discuss their situation and implement strategies for improvement.
