Academic Standing

Academic standing is not only important for determining your eligibility for Financial Aid, but also establishes whether or not you are progressing through your courses in an acceptable manner. As such, you need to adopt a 'big picture' perspective that extends beyond your current semester GPA to include your cumulative GPA as well.

How UNC Asheville determines academic standing

Your GPA is where it all begins. While you can find your GPA listed in your OnePort account, you need to know how to complete this calculation on your own. Understanding how to calculate your GPA is important since it assists in your academic planning process and helps emphasize the significance of giving your best effort towards all of your courses.

If your GPA is lower than a 2.0, you will find yourself on Academic Warning. While this is not intended as punishment, it nevertheless signals the need for you to reassess the variables that ultimately influence your academic performance.

If you continue to struggle academically after being placed on academic warning, you may eventually face academic suspension. Again, the intention behind this classification is not to punish. Nevertheless, persistent academic difficulties simply cannot be ignored or easily dismissed.

What this means

"Knowledge is power", so the best thing you can do is be aware of UNC Asheville's academic expectations. Once you fully understand our guiding parameters, you can incorporate them into your academic plan accordingly.
