Planning Your First Semester

Before your arrival on campus for embark, spend some time getting acquainted with UNC Asheville. Listed below is information that will introduce you to our curriculum. During embark, you will have the opportunity to discuss your plans for Fall 2012 before registering for courses, but your preparation begins here and now!

Taking the time to explore the information provided here will ensure you get the most out of your embark experience and set you on a path for success!

First Things First

Review the Integrative Liberal Studies (ILS) program, UNC Asheville's core curriculum. The ILS program is unique to UNC Asheville, giving you a firm academic foundation with an emphasis on interdisciplinary exploration. Although we will explain the ILS curriculum requirements during embark, we strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the program before arriving at embark.

A Class for Your First Semester

All new students are required to take a Liberal Studies Introductory Colloquium Course (LSIC). This course will introduce you to the academic rigor of UNC Asheville as well as help in your transition to our campus community. Freshman LSIC courses are taught in a variety of disciplines throughout our curriculum and are designated by having 179 as their course number.

Select a Possible Major

Freshmen are not required to know their intended major upon arrival at UNC Asheville. However, if you already have an idea about which area you want to pursue for your major, check out our Recommended first year courses by major. This will give you an idea of which courses you should take during your first semester here.

Plan Ahead

DegPAR (Degree Progress Advising Report) is a useful tool for planning your courses for the upcoming semester. It allows you to see the requirements for all of our majors and minors, as well as your academic progress.

What do You Want to Take?

Look for courses that fulfill ILS requirements, potential major requirements, and peak your interest. Try to compile a list of at least 7 courses, noting the priority you assign to them along with the days and times they will meet during the semester. Below are several links that will assist you in creating this list.

Plan a Schedule

Now that you have done some preliminary planning for the upcoming semester, don't forget to bring your list of potential courses with you to embark to review during your advising appointment.

Finish Taking Care of Business

We have taken care of the guesswork for you by creating a checklist that covers all you need to address before you arrive at embark. Addressing the items on the checklist before you arrive will allow you to focus on building your Fall 2012 semester schedule during embark.
