Can students place out of requirements?

Foreign Language

We offer 1 official placement test at UNC Asheville: foreign language. Students may take a Foreign Language Placement Test for French, Spanish, or Latin at orientation. To inquire about placement tests in other languages or for exams offered through the semester, contact the Foreign Language department. Your score on the Foreign Language Placement test may fulfill some or the entire foreign language requirement.

Math

The Math Department has an online placement test that you can take to assess your skills level. This placement test doesn't give you credit for a requirement, but it does help you help you make the appropriate decision about which math course you should take to complete the requirement. Don't forget that some majors require you to take specific courses to complete the math requirement!

Other requirements

If you believe you may be able to place out of a course based on your previous experience with the material, please see the chair of the department that controls the course. If appropriate, they will discuss placement options with you.
