I've just been accepted to UNC Asheville. When do I
register? New students register at different times, based on their student status (new freshman, transfer, graduate, non-degree seeking, etc). Your Admissions letter will provide you with detailed information about your registration procedures. |

|
Am
I required to see my advisor every semester? It is your responsibility as a student to contact your advisor before or during the advising period to set up an appointment. Keep in mind the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to set up an appointment that is convenient for you. Not sure who your advisor is? Continuing students click here; freshmen click here; transfers click here. To find your advisors contact information, use the UNC Asheville directory. |
||||||||||||
|
How do I contact my advisor and set up an appointment? Degree-seeking students are required to see their academic advisor at least once a semester. When you meet with your advisor prior to registration, they will give you a registration access number (RAN). You will need to enter this RAN in order to register. Students who are not required to see an advisor are assigned a standard RAN each semester. |

Who has to take an LSIC course and when should I take it? All new students students are required to take an LSIC course, with one exception: students who completed the 44 hour General Education Core and have the appropriate notation on their transcript are not required to take an LSIC. However, we strongly recommend that students with the 44 hour Core still take an LSIC course. These courses will better acclimate you to the UNC Asheville culture and our academic requirements. In addition, all LSIC courses fulfill at least one Intensive requirement (LSIC 179s are Writing Intensive, LSIC 379s are both Writing and Information Literacy Intensive). From the UNC Asheville Catalog: "Students must successfully complete the Liberal Studies Introductory Colloquium, LS 179 or 379 within their first two semesters at UNC Asheville. Students who fail to successfully complete the course in their first semester will be limited to 14 or fewer credit hours, which must include the LSIC, in their second semester. Students who do not successfully complete the LSIC requirement in their first two semesters of enrollment will not be allowed to continue in a full-time status at the University until this requirement has been satisfied. If the LSIC requirement is not satisfied in the first two semesters of enrollment, the student will be allowed to register only for the LSIC course until the requirement is successfully completed. All other courses for which the student has registered will be administratively dropped. Less than full-time status may impact the student’s eligibility for financial aid, housing, veteran’s benefits, intercollegiate athletics, and progress toward graduation." |

I'm not sure how to use OnePort to register. Are there any
directions? The first thing you'll need to register through OnePort is your user name and password. If you're a new student, you will receive more information about how and where to get your OnePort information from Admissions. If you're a continuing student and you've forgotten your login information, contact the ITS Helpdesk. Detailed OnePort directions can be found here. |

I tried to register and got the message "You are not
permitted to register at this time". What should I do? First, double check the semester's registration schedule and make sure you are trying to register at the right time (for instance, if you're a sophomore, but you're trying to register on the day assigned to juniors, you'll get this message). If that doesn't seem to be the problem, come by the Advising & Learning Support Center for help. |

How do I know what
my class is? Your class status is determined by your earned hours (these are the classes that you have taken and received grades for) Freshmen: 0-29 earned hours Sophomores: 30-59 earned hours Juniors: 60-89 earned hours Seniors: 90+ earned hours |

I want to get into a class that I can't register for through
OnePort. What do I do? Instructors can give you permission through OnePort if you are trying to register for a class and get one of these errors: Closed Class, Pre-Req or Test Score, or Time Conflict. If an instructor gives you an online override through OnePort, you must go into OnePort and register for the class before the end of the Drop/Add period. If you get the error Maximum Hours Exceeded, and you are not on Academic Warning, you'll need to have your advisor fill out the Registration Overload form. A Repeat Count error means that you are trying to register for a class you already have on your transcript. To take the course again, you'll need to complete a Repeat form in the Registrar's Office. If you get a Link error, it means that the class has a lab section, and you must register for both the class and the lab at the same time. |

I registered for classes during Pre-Registration or Orientation.
When can I change my schedule again? Fall: Registration closes after Pre-Registration (April, for continuing students) and embark orientation (June, for new students). While registration is closed, the Cashier's Office calculates bills, Financial Aid continues to work on aid packages, and Academic Administration examines the schedule to see if we need to cancel or add any new classes. OnePort reopens for registration a few days before the semester starts, and you can make changes through OnePort until the end of the Drop/Add period. For semester-specific information, click here. Summer: Registration closes after Pre-Registration, and will reopen for a few days before classes begin. Spring: Registration closes after Pre-Registration (November, for continuing students) and reopens for the Drop/Add period after the new students registration at Summit in January. |

What is the difference between a "drop" and a "withdrawal"? When you "drop" a class, there is no record on your transcript that you ever had the class on your schedule. When you "withdraw" from a class, the title of the class shows on your transcript with the grade of "W". |
||||||||||||
|
How
will withdrawing from a class affect me? "W" grades do not affect your GPA. However, they are calculated in your attempted hours, which can affect your financial aid eligibility and determine which bracket you are in for academic suspension and dismissal calculations. In addition, classes you have withdrawn from do not count in your "active enrollment", which can affect your ability to live in the residence halls. |
||||||||||||
|
Do
I get money back if I withdraw from a class? You will not get a refund if you only withdraw from some of your classes. If you withdraw from your whole semester, you may get a percentage of your tuition and fees refunded, depending on the date of your withdrawal. For more information about refunds, contact the Cashier's Office. |

What
does it mean to be on Academic Warning? You will be placed on Academic Warning if your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. If you are on Academic Warning, you will receive a letter explaining what this means and what resources we have on campus that can help you bring your GPA up. A hold will be placed on your account, and you will need to see you advisor to get this hold removed. In addition, you will be limited to 14 hours in Fall and Spring semesters, or one class per term in the Summer while you are on Academic Warning. |

What are UNC Asheville's policies on Academic Suspension and
Academic Dismissal? From the UNC Asheville Catalog: Students must maintain a grade-point average at or above the following levels in order to be enrolled at UNC Asheville:
First Semester Rule: Students completing their first semester of enrollment at UNC Asheville must earn a grade-point average of 1.00 or above. Students whose grade-point average is below 1.00 at the end of their first semester will be suspended for one semester. After your first semester: If you have been on Academic Warning for one semester, and are not able to reach your required GPA levels, you may be eligible for suspension. If you are suspended, you will receive a letter in the mail, explaining how many semesters you must be away from UNC Asheville and the process for returning. When you return from suspension, you must meet both of the following expectations to avoid Academic Dismissal: a) earn a 2.25 semester GPA during each semester or summer term of enrollment until your cumulative GPA is above minimal levels, AND b) achieve your appropriate minimal cumulative GPA level within 24 attempted semester hours after re-enrollment |

|
What do I do if I want to withdraw from UNC Asheville or
take some time off? If you want to withdraw from UNC Asheville during a semester, you'll need to complete exit paperwork. If you want to finish the current semester, but have made plans not to enroll in future semesters, you'll need to complete the Enrollment Notification Form. |

I'm a parent or family member of a student, and I have some
questions about their academics. Who should I talk to? At UNC Asheville, we follow the privacy regulations outlined in the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which state that a student's academic information can be released only to the student. The only information that we can share with people other than the student is "directory information", which includes their major field of study, full or part time status, class (freshmen, sophomore, etc), dates of attendance, and degrees and awards received. Please note that the following are not things that we can share with parents, family members, or friends, without written consent from the student: who the student's advisor is, what they are currently enrolled in or have taken in the past, what grades they have received, what their GPA is, or if they are under any academic action (Academic Warning, etc). If you want information like this about your student, you will need to talk with them. |
||||||||||||
|
I'm transferring to UNC Asheville. How do I know if my
classes will transfer? After you have been accepted to UNC Asheville, your transcript will be evaluated in the Registrar's Office. You will be able to view this evaluation in OnePort. For more information about transferring, click here. |

|
What key academic dates should I be aware of each semester? As a faculty member, you should keep a close eye on the academic calendar each semester, as there are many dates you should be aware of. When it comes to deadlines that affect students' registration, there are a few in particular you should note: the end of the Drop/Add Period, the end of the Late Add Period, and the Withdrawal Period (for First, Second, and Full Term courses). Specific information about these deadlines can be found here. |
||||||||||||
|
A student who is not my advisee has set up an advising
appointment with me. How do I get access to their records? If a student has set up an advising appointment with you instead of with their "official" advisor, you can call the Advising & Learning Support Center to request that you be added to the student's record as an additional advisor. After you have been added to the student's record, you will be able to access all of their academic information. If you don't want to remain on the student's account, just let us know after the appointment and we will remove you. |

I want to add a student to my class. What is the procedure? During the Pre-Registration and Drop/Add periods, you may give students online permission to register for your class. After you grant students online permissions, they must log into OnePort and register for the classes themselves. You can find detailed instructions about this process here. During the Late Add period, you may add students to your class by using the Late Add form. After the Late Add period has ended, students may only be added to classes in cases with significant extenuating circumstances. |
