Mathematics
Today more than ever mathematics is taking a leading role in shaping our rapidly changing, highly technological world. Mathematicians are joining with scientists from other disciplines to solve many pressing problems in medicine, ecology, economics, business and social sciences. Mathematics is fundamental to many disciplines and an important part of a liberal arts education. Math develops skills that are increasingly vital to modern professions—analytical thinking, data analysis, mathematical modeling, pattern recognition and problem solving. In this modern, ever-changing world, the ability to think in quantitative terms, to reason analytically and to understand and communicate mathematical ideas will be essential for success.
Program of Study
The Mathematics Department at UNC Asheville prides itself on the diversity of its curriculum, offering four concentrations: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Teaching of Mathematics and Statistics. All mathematics majors take a three-semester calculus sequence, a foundations course, linear algebra and other upper-level courses according to concentration area and interest to round out a program of 38 or more credit hours.
Pure Mathematics
This concentration stresses the concept of mathematics as a liberal arts discipline, mathematics for mathematics’ sake. The courses are designed to give students a general understanding of mathematical theory and the background needed to pursue mathematics in graduate school.
Teaching of Mathematics
This concentration leads to secondary-school teaching licensure.
Applied Mathematics
This concentration encourages students to combine mathematical studies with another discipline. There is a strong emphasis on using mathematics to address practical problems.
Statistics
The study of the analysis and interpretation of data prepares students for careers in actuarial science, quality control, data analysis and related fields.
Post-Graduate Opportunities
Our program also prepares students for graduate work in mathematics or mathematics-related fields. Our graduates have entered higher degree programs and successfully completed studies in many different areas related to mathematics. Examples of such programs include medical school and law school; graduate studies in statistics, computer science and business administration; and doctoral programs in mathematics.
A bachelor’s degree in mathematics is a good foundation for a wide range of professional degrees. Our graduates are employed in education, government, industry, the military and research labs. Our department prides itself on allowing students to gain a broad education so that they may maximize their employment options when they graduate.
Mathematics Assistance Center
Most of our post-calculus courses have an enrollment of five to 15 students, which fosters valuable one-to-one relationships between students and teachers. The department’s Mathematics Assistance Center provides free tutoring services, an all-important extra touch to help students master the fundamentals. Located in Rhoades Hall, the “Math Lab” is staffed by students and faculty and open at convenient hours.
