Residential Education
Living and Learning at UNC Asheville
Living on campus is an ideal way to make the most of your college experience. On-campus living in one of our residence halls offers the convenience, support and sense of community that is important to the liberal arts college experience. On-campus residents are in an excellent position to benefit from the many resources and activities that this outstanding learning community provides.
Why Live on Campus?
Living on campus puts you in the heart of the UNC Asheville learning community. You’re within a short walk of classroom buildings, University Hall (where the dining hall is located), Ramsey Library, the Health and Fitness Center, recreation facilities and parking. The residence halls offer the experience of living in a diverse community of students and provide unique opportunities for academic and personal growth. As you get to know classmates, professors and staff members well, you become an integral part of the university, making lifelong friends and connections. Residence hall living at UNC Asheville can be a rewarding experience that you’ll value throughout your life.
The On-Campus Advantage
- You’re close to campus activities. Residence halls offer convenient access to classes, the library, Dining Hall, Health and Fitness Center, Botanical Gardens, Weaver Boulevard Greenway and more.
- On-campus living provides opportunities to meet new people and socialize. Fun outside the classroom is an important part of the college experience. From special study-break events to karaoke night, bingo and movie openings, the Residential Education programs help fill in your social calendar. You’ll make lifelong friends with other students in your residence hall and meet people from all over the United States and the world.
- You’re in the middle of the action. As a residential student, you’re more likely to participate in campus events, attend concerts and lectures, and join organizations than students who must drive to campus for university-sponsored cultural events, plays, lectures, movies and entertainment. So you’re taking advantage of the well-rounded college education that UNC Asheville offers.
- It’s a time-saver because you won’t spend time driving to classes and events or looking for parking.
- It’s a money-saver on housing, food and other living expenses. You make one payment per semester for all housing, meals, utilities and health services.
- Dining Services offers well-balanced meals and snacks prepared and served in a variety of venues and at convenient times for students.
- Asheville Transit provides free bus service to shopping, movies, restaurants and downtown. Just show your OneCard and get on to ride!
- A 24-hour maintenance hotline for repair requests is a phone call away.
- The safety of living on a campus that is well lighted and compact is reassuring to students and their families. Campus Police are sworn police officers. They are on duty 24 hours a day and offer a late-night escort service on request.
- You have the support of our Residential Education professional staff who are on call 24 hours a day to assist students with personal concerns or emergencies.
UNC Asheville Residence Halls
Our residence halls provide a comfortable home away from home. Rooms are furnished with single beds, dressers, desks, chairs and window blinds. Each room has an Internet connection for each resident (a “port per pillow”), local telephone and cable television service. Standard features in all the halls include study areas, laundry facilities, computer labs, TV lounges, individual mailboxes, vending areas and air-conditioning (except Governors Village). Residence halls are smoke-free, except for designated floors in Founders, Mills and Governors Village. The professional staff and resident assistants are trained to help students with academic and personal concerns.
Founders Hall
Located near the University Hall and Highsmith University Union, Founders is a seven-story residence hall housing 300 students. Amenities include one combination microwave/refrigerator per room, and the Video Lending Library.
Mills Hall
Adjacent to Highsmith University Union, Mills houses 300 students in newly renovated suites comprising two bedrooms, a bath and den. Each suite has one combination microwave/refrigerator. An outside courtyard is a great place for meeting friends and playing sand volleyball.
Governors Hall
Governors Hall houses 184 students in single and double rooms, arranged in suites. Amenities include one microwave/refrigerator in each room and a kitchen for student use.
South Ridge and West Ridge
These residence halls are situated in a wooded environment near the Botanical Gardens. They house 112 and 148 students, respectively, in double rooms. Amenities include one microwave/refrigerator, kitchens for student use and a parking deck.
Governors Village
These small buildings, named for former governors of North Carolina, offer single rooms for approximately 100 students. There are five single rooms on each hall, and residents share two common bathrooms on each hall.
Room Assignments
Room assignments are based on an application and questionnaire that each new student completes. Every effort is made to match students with common interests according to space availability. Students may move anywhere for any reason, if space permits, during the room change period after the first two weeks of classes. Some students move because they prefer another residence hall or wish to room with a new friend.
Dining Services
Campus Dining Services provides flexible meal plans and a variety of high-quality dining options for the UNC Asheville community. Resident students are required to purchase a meal plan that offers a wide selection of foods to accommodate many dietary needs and preferences. Every meal plan includes a declining balance credit that students may use at the food court area in Highsmith University Union or at Café Ramsey (an atrium-like area off the library lobby). There are no meal plan exemptions. Students have an opportunity to change their meal plans at the beginning of each semester.
