UNC Asheville complies with laws designed to protect the rights of disabled persons, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. UNC Asheville focuses on the student as an individual and works toward equal opportunity, full integration into the campus environment, physical accessibility and the provision of reasonable accommodations, auxiliary aids and services to students. Services such as tutoring, readers, assistance, counseling and others are available, designed and developed based on individual needs. Services appropriate to student needs are free of charge. A visit to the campus before acceptance or matriculation is recommended.
Planning ahead is a requirement for all students who are preparing to attend UNC Asheville. All students with disabilities should contact the Director of Disability Services during their planning process. Please call or visit the office about two months before your academic semester begins to talk with us about required forms and documentation.
Once you have decided to attend UNC Asheville, contact your diagnostician. In most cases, acceptable reports come from psychologists, psychiatrists, audiologists, speech therapists and physicians. All documents must be current (within the past three years) and include information regarding diagnosis, medication and recommendations.
Available accommodations include curb cuts, ramped entrances to classrooms, automatic doors, relocation of classes to accessible buildings, special housing needs, specialized computer software, tutors, enlarged print text books, books on tape, priority seating, extended test time and more.
