While
the main purpose of attending higher education is to increase
knowledge and understanding of the academic world, the
connection between campus life and academia is often
under-emphasized. Successful students should not only excel in
the classroom, but also enjoy the world around them. UNC
Asheville is closely linked with the surrounding community and
offers enriching activities both on and off campus.
Intercollegiate
Athletics round out the academic, cultural and social
facets of college life. The Bulldogs compete in 14 NCAA
Division I sports for men and women -- basketball, cross
country, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, tennis,
baseball and volleyball.
Our
student athletes excel in the classroom as well as in the
playing arena, winning numerous Academic All-American and
Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and achieving a high
graduation rate. UNC Asheville student athletes on
athletics scholarships who played all four years here have a
98 percent graduation rate.Recreation
and Intramurals provide a great way to stay in shape, meet
others who share your interests and have fun. More than
half our students participate in intramurals in basketball,
soccer, softball, volleyball, flag football, tennis, golf, racquetball,
kickball and more.
Our
complete facilities include the Justice Athletic Center, the
Health and Fitness Center and Greenwood Field. The
Health and Fitness Center houses a modern weight and fitness
room, 1/10-mile indoor track, dance studio, multi-purpose and
racquetball courts, and a biometrics lab, all available to you
at convenient hours.
UNC
Asheville Outdoors gives students of all skill levels a
chance to experience adventure and travel. The programs
include trips, equipment rentals, clinics and workshops. The great outdoors is our backyard
at UNC Asheville. Join us for an outdoor adventure in
kayaking, white-water rafting, backpacking, rock climbing,
caving, horseback riding and much more.
Over
60 clubs and organizations keep students as busy as they
want to be outside the classroom. The university
sponsors Greek-letter sororities and fraternities, clubs and
honor societies, service organizations, a campus newspaper and
art journal, Theatre UNC-Asheville, concerts and art exhibitions.
All these groups welcome wide participation. An active
Student Government Association encourages you to get involved.
Cultural
Events on campus appeal to broad interests. UNC
Asheville exposes students to a wide range of talent and ideas
through Art, Drama and Music department productions, Cultural
and Special Events and Underdog Productions programs.
Recently Hollywood actress Andie MacDowell starred in Love
Letters with our Drama Department's Scott Walters.
Music Department students and faculty perform community
concerts, jazz festivals and music clinics each year.
The Art Department brings national exhibitions to the
University Gallery. Our Cultural and Special Events
offer a varied lineup of world-class performers each year.
Nationally
known lecturers visit UNC Asheville, including recent
guests historian John Hope Franklin and the 39th poet laureate
of the United States, Robert Pinksy. UNC-Asheville hosts the
Mountain Echoes Storyfest and the Great Smokies Writing
Program featuring regional authors. All year long, UNC-Asheville
offers stimulating programs for the Western North Carolina
community.
You'll
see the world come to UNC Asheville through our
multicultural programs which celebrate and inform our
community about the diverse cultural backgrounds represented
on campus and in American society. The African American
Student Organization and the International Student
Organization offer friendship, support, enrichment activities
and lots of fun. From Fiesta, the Hispanic heritage
celebration in the fall, to the International Dinner in the
spring, you'll experience the world at UNC Asheville.
Expand
your horizons though UNC Asheville's study
abroad/ study away program. As part of the UNC -
Exchange Program, the International Student Exchange Program
and the National Student Exchange UNC Asheville students
have the opportunity to study at hundreds of universities both
domestically and internationally.
