Testing for Credit

Clep Credit
UNC Asheville awards credit for many CLEP exams if the score is 500 (50th percentile) or above. CLEP offers two series of exams, general and subject. General exams must be completed prior to the end of the first term of residence at any institution of higher learning. Subject exams may be taken at any time during the student’s enrollment.
Proficiency Exams
Any currently enrolled student may fill out a Proficiency Examination form obtained from the Advising and Learning Support Center and make arrangements with the department in which the course is taught to take an examination covering all material in the course. Grading will be “Pass” or “Fail.” Passing results will be noted on the student’s transcript, and the requirement for the course will be fulfilled. However, no credit hours will be awarded, and the minimum number of hours required for a degree will not be reduced. There is a fee.
Advanced Placement
The university grants academic credit of 3 to 6 semester hours to enrolled students who took Advanced Placement Tests (offered by the College Board) while in high school. The specific amount of credit and course waivers offered are determined by the academic departments for which Advanced Placement Tests are available. The schedule of credit and waivers is located below. Advanced Placement credit accepted at other post-secondary institutions is not automatically transferred to UNC Asheville. Reports must be received directly from the College Board and will be reviewed in accordance with this schedule.
- AP test and review of portfolio by the Art Department may result in course waiver.
- Students will not receive credit for both Language and Composition, and Literature and Composition AP tests.
- Students who score 5 on either test should contact the department chair for placement.
- Students will not receive credit for both European and World History AP tests.
