Freshmen

UNC Asheville is looking for students with diverse backgrounds who thrive on active learning. We believe this happens best on a campus where classes are small, faculty want the best from and for their students, and where there is opportunity for personal growth.
REQUIREMENTS:
Admissions professionals review your application individually and evaluate how well your goals and strengths match our educational mission. Most of our incoming freshmen fit the following profile:
- Strong B+ average in high school
- Rigorous college prep curriculum including Advanced Placement and Honors courses
- Ranking in top 50 percent of high school class
- Average SAT score is 1180 (Critical Reading and Math Sections only)
- Average ACT composite score is 26
- Extra-curricular activities in school and the community, including athletics participation
- Honors, awards, special talents and skills
In order to be considered for admission, all applicants must fulfill North Carolina ’s Minimum Course Requirements:
- High school diploma from a regionally accredited secondary school
- Four units of college preparatory English
- Four units of mathematics including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and a class beyond Algebra II
- Three units of science including one unit of biological science, one unit of physical science and one laboratory course
- Two units of social studies, including one unit of United States history
- Two units of the same foreign language (recommended one unit taken in the 12th grade)
Along with your complete application, all applicants for admission as new freshmen must submit the following items by the appropriate deadline:
- 1. Official high school transcript mailed by your school counselor, that includes your high school studies through the date of application, your grade-point average and your class rank. (This should be submitted with the Transcript Supplement and Counselor Statement listed below.)
- Transcript Supplement and Counselor Statement. To be submitted by your counselor or teacher with your high school transcript.
- Official SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing Test scores. These scores are to be sent directly from the testing agency to UNC Asheville (SAT Code 5013 and ACT Code 3064). If you did not report your scores to UNC Asheville at the time of testing, please contact the College Board at www.collegeboard.com, call 866.756.7346, or write College Board, Box 592, Princeton, NJ 09540. For the ACT: www.act.org, call 319.337.1000, or write P.O. Box 168, Iowa City, Iowa 55243-0168.

- After graduation, you must submit a final high school transcript showing your date of graduation, final grade-point average and class rank.
HOME SCHOOL APPLICANTS
Please follow instructions for Freshman applicants with an additional requirement of a copy of the registration with the North Carolina Department of Non Public Education (NC residents only). Non-North Carolina applicants should submit official documentation indicating approval to provide home school instruction.
Official transcript(s) should include notarized signature of home school official. All courses, grades, and units of credit must be recorded on the transcript.
TESTING FOR CREDIT
The University of North Carolina at Asheville offers and participates in several programs that permit students to receive academic credit or complete their degree requirements. UNC Asheville does not accept proficiency credit from another institution of higher education but will consider Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, College Level Examination Program, Proficiency Examination Program and correspondence work. - Average ACT composite score of 28

- Demonstrated commitment to community service

Laurels Scholarship:
To be considered for the Laurels Scholarship, students must submit a completed admissions application, including official transcripts and standardized test scores by November 15, 2012. There is no separate scholarship application required, however, students must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Student must be in the top 10% of his/her senior class
- Student must have at least a 3.75 unweighted GPA
- Student must have an average SAT score of 1250 (Critical Reading and Math Sections only) or an average ACT composite score of 28
