Integrative Liberal Studies

LibraryTo explore where you can go in life, it helps to first see the broader picture. Every student at UNC Asheville takes the educational journey by following our core curriculum, the Integrative Liberal Studies program. To start off, classes such as academic writing, foreign language, math and laboratory sciences provide a solid broad foundation. In other classes, students tackle complex issues that sound straight from the daily headlines. Thinking through thorny challenges such as global warming, health care reform and HIV/AIDS, they’ll draw on what they’ve already learned while seeing what they’ve yet to explore.

Integrative Liberal Studies emphasizes the overlap between seemingly unrelated disciplines. Weaving together the humanities, arts, natural and social sciences provides an eye-opening course of study that prepares students for any future endeavor. Upperclass students pursue their own academic interests in intensive undergraduate research — the kind usually reserved for postgraduate study.

This multifaceted, liberal arts approach is what makes a UNC Asheville education — and our graduates — stand out in the crowd.
