Preparing the Elements

Templates 1, 2, and 3 can all be customized for your department or office. These instructions will guide you in creating a web site for your department which will be consistent with the UNC Asheville web site.

Step 1: Requesting a header. To request an official web site header for your office, send an e-mail to webmaster@unca.edu  Please indicate how you would like your header to be worded (i.e. "Department of Chemistry" or "Chemistry Department"). Within two business days, you will be notified that the header is complete and receive instructions for using it correctly.

Step 2: Download the appropriate templates. If you are a web site developer, please download the templates from this area of the site to your hard drive; do not "copy and paste" source code of the templates.

Download Templates (in ZIP format)

When you have completed downloading templates, save them on your hard drive. You will not need to access them until you begin to customize the code.

Step 3: Write an introductory paragraph. Using a text editing tool, write an introductory paragraph for your department or office web page (do not format the text at all -- it should not include any bolding, underlining, italics, etc.)  It should describe the purpose of your department and introduce the content of the web site.

Step 4: Outline or storyboard the primary list of links. The links should reflect the structure of your site and may lead to more menu pages (Template 2, for example), or information pages (Template 3, for example). At this time, you should also determine content for your site. Save this information in some other text editing tool (again, do not format the text -- that will be done later with the HTML editing tool you use).

Step 5: Choose department information. Determine contact information for the lower right hand corner of your page. The contact information MUST include an e-mail link. The e-mail may go to either the Information Provider for the site or the person responsible for maintaining the site.

When you have finished preparing the elements for your web site, you may continue to Customizing the Code.
