Frequently Asked Questions
How
do I use the UNC Asheville web templates?
Detailed
instructions on how to use the templates can be found under the Templates
portion of the Web Resources section.
I've
tried to follow the template instructions, but my pages still don't work/look
right -- what is wrong?
Without knowing the
exact steps you used to use the templates, it would be very difficult to know
how to fix the problem. Please email webmaster@unca.edu
the URL and exact error message/problem you are having.
How
do I get/setup webspace for my department?
The department
chair should send an email to webmaster@unca.edu
requesting webspace be created for that department. In the email,
include the requested URL (e.g. http://www.unca.edu/department/) and the users
(include usernames of those individuals) who will be responsible for the
content.
Am
I required to use the UNC Asheville web templates?
No. You
are not required, but highly encouraged to use the template. If you need
help using the template or if what you are creating for the web does not
really fit within the template, please contact webmaster@unca.edu
for other options.
What
are the hex color codes used on this website?
The hex codes for
the UNC Asheville website are blue (#000066) and yellow/gold (#FFCC33).
For more information on these colors or if you need help using the
template, please contact webmaster@unca.edu.
I
want to use the UNC Asheville logo (or other images) but in a different color or
size -- can I do that?
We do not
recommend trying to use or modify any of the template images as they were
specifically designed for use in the template. Contact webmaster@unca.edu
for other customized versions of the UNC Asheville web images.
Where
can I find out more about HTML and creating web pages?
Links to various
sites can be found under the Other Resources portion
of the Web Resources section.
Can
I use frames on my web site?
We highly
discourage the use of frames. Often times frames are used to provide a
consistent navigation structure for a web site. However, if someone
reaches one of your pages via a search engine, for example, the navigation
structure is not likely to be loaded. It is typically best to avoid the
use of frames when at all possible.
I've
heard about Web Accessibility, but does that really apply to my web pages?
Yes.
Several recent changes to state and federal laws require that employees and
members of the public with disabilities have access to and use of information
and data comparable to that of the employees and members of the public without
disabilities unless it is an undue burden to do so. More information can
be found at the following sites:
How
do I check my web pages to make sure they're accessible to those with
disabilities?
If you use the UNC
Asheville web templates and follow the instructions for customizing
the code, then your pages should be accessible. You can always check
your pages for compliance using Bobby 3.2;
you should also always ensure your pages use valid HTML by checking them
against W3C's HTML Validator.
I
would like to take a FrontPage/Dreamweaver workshop -- when will the next one be
offered?
University
Computing (the Computer Center) offers FrontPage and Dreamweaver workshops
typically during the first part of each semester -- check
the workshop schedule for more information.
I
don't have FrontPage/Dreamweaver installed on my computer -- is it installed in
any of the labs around campus?
Yes. Check
the Computer
Labs web page for more information.
Why
did you change the web page design?
We received many
good comments and suggestions when we implemented the last web design.
Based upon that feedback and other factors, a new "look" was
designed to address those issues.
How
do I go about getting something put on the UNC Asheville home page for my event?
Space on the UNC
Asheville home page is limited. Obviously, it is not possible to
list/link to every event on campus -- please contact the Public Information
Office (pubinfo@unca.edu or 828/251-6526)
for information.
How
do you make the images rotate on the UNC Asheville home page?
It is a fairly
complex procedure, but a simpler JavaScript solution is available -- contact webmaster@unca.edu
for more information.
I've
got a question/complaint about <fill-in-the-blank> -- who should I
contact?
Please use
the on-line form to submit your comment or question -- based upon the
subject you choose, your question will be sent to the appropriate
office. You can also always send an email to webmaster@unca.edu
