Internal policies on lecturer positions
Office of Academic Affairs
(Distributed
Fall semester, 2004; modified Summer term, 2006)
Types of lecturer positions
Lecturer positions may be requested in
two circumstances. A temporary lecturer may be requested to fill
immediate instructional needs with no expectation to keep the position beyond
the single year or term. Temporary lecturers most often substitute for tenure
track faculty when a search is in progress. A continuing lecturer
position may be requested when a department/program wishes to add a lecturer to
its full-time staff.
Allocation of lecturer positions
Temporary lecturer
Departments/programs requesting a temporary lecturer to serve during a faculty
search should submit the request at the same time as the request for the
full-time position. Requests for other temporary lecturers should be submitted
to the appropriate program area Dean by the end of March. Such requests are filled based upon
funding and FTE availability, and are for temporary instructional needs only.
Communication with candidates for these positions should clearly specify the
intended temporary nature of the position.
Continuing lecturer positions
Departments/programs that wish to
request a new continuing lecturer position must submit that request to the
Committee on Position Allocation. These requests follow the same timetable as
all other position requests. Initial contracts are for one year only
but there is an expectation of renewal based on the continuing instructional
needs for the position. Departments/programs that receive these positions
return to the Committee on Position Allocation before awarding or renewing a
multi-year contract. Multi-year contracts may be offered after successful
completion of 3 one-year contracts.
Review/reappointment of lecturers
Temporary lecturer
Departments/programs may request to
retain a temporary lecturer only in exceptional circumstances. Such requests
are made to the appropriate program area Dean and must include (1) a justification of the
need that requires renewal of the position and (2) a performance review of the
individual for whom reappointment is requested. Performance reviews must
include student evaluation data. Renewal of the appointment continues the
temporary nature of the position.
Continuing lecturer
Continuing lecturer positions involve
two types of reviews: a review by the appropriate program area Dean during contract years
1-2 and a review by the Committee on Position Allocations prior to the awarding
of a multi-year contract. During years 1-2, written requests for continuation
are made to the appropriate program area Dean by March 1. Performance reviews of the
faculty appointed to these positions are completed in consultation with the
program area Deans and follow the same timetable as all other faculty reviews. For
information on the performance review process, please see Senate Document 1904S. |
