UNC Asheville is committed to enhancing the health and wellness of all members of its community through access to information and activities that contribute to healthy lifestyles.  Currently available options include...

Nutritional counseling:  Chartwell's dietician, Janet Zusi, is available for for individual nutritional counseling and assessment.  Janet is available Mondays and Thursdays, 9 AM-3 PM, and can be reached at 828-251-6183 or by email.

Walking trails:  UNC Asheville offers walking trails within and adjacent to campus--the University Heights loop, the Glen Creek greenway on W.T. Weaver Boulevard, the Reed Creek greenway on Broadway, and the trail through the Botanical Gardens.  For information and maps, go to http://www.unca.edu/transportation/walkingmaps.html.

Free fitness assessments:  Campus Recreation offers free assessments in the biometrics lab including blood pressure, weight, body fat, aerobic fitness, flexibility, and strength.  Assessments are available the first and last weeks of each month.  For questions or to sign up, please contact Dominique Ennis at 232-2881 or dennis@unca.edu.

Low cost personal training packages:  Campus Recreation offers two personal training packages for those who need some additional help with exercise and nutrition.  For more information, go to http://www.unca.edu/recreation/wl_training.asp.

Biofeedback training:  The Department of Health and Wellness in partnership with Campus Recreation offers a variety of facilitated and self-directed programs in the new optimal performance lab (HFC 210).  All programs use biofeedback to enhance awareness of users physiological responses to stress and to teach ways to reduce tension.  For more information, go to http://www.unca.edu/recreation/wl_biofeedback.asp.

Exercise opportunities:  The Health and Fitness Center offers many opportunities to get in shape including recreational and lap swim, working out in the weight room, and walking/jogging on the indoor track.  For hours of operation, go to http://www.unca.edu/recreation/hours.asp.

Group fitness classes:  Campus Recreation offers free fitness classes (with a valid UNCA ID card) in yoga, pilates, aerobics, and more.  Classes are held in HFC Dance Studio, Pool, or Highsmith Union.  For a current schedule of classes, go to http://www.unca.edu/recreation/groupFitness.asp.

Center for Teaching and Learning:  The Center for Teaching and Learning hosts learning circles every semester, and usually over the summer as well.  Focused on personal and professional growth, these discussion groups are open to faculty and staff, and cover topics as varied as Robert Moses' Algebra Project and Martin Seligman's Authentic Happiness.  For more information and a schedule of activities for the semester, go to http://www.ctl.unca.edu/.

Work/Life Center Online:  The Employee Assistant Network provides a variety of behavioral health care services and resources.  For more information, go to https://eannc.personaladvantage.com/index.php.

State Health Plan:  The State Health Plan (http://www.shpnc.org/)  provides a number of resources and free or low-cost opportunities to increase one's health. Among these are:

  • NC HealthSmart:  A portal to resources for healthy living (http://www.shpnc.org/nc-healthsmart.html)
  • Smoking cessation:  The N.C. State Health Plan announced that it is offering free generic nicotine patches to its members in response to the smoking ban in state government buildings and operations that began Tuesday.  To receive the patches, members of the State Health Plan must receive counseling from their health-care provider or take advantage of free tobacco-cessation support services available through NC Quitline.  For more information, visit www.shpnc.org/wellness.html or contact NC Quitline at 800-784-8669.
  • Flu shots:  Annual free or low cost flu shots each year (dates announced by Human Resources via email)
