2007-08 Program Goals and Progress

Goal #1:  Providing training to committee members regarding best practices in workplace wellness

  • A member of the Health and Wellness faculty with expertise in workplace wellness is serving as program advisor.
  • We each received a notebook of materials from the State Health Plan on setting up workplace wellness programs and Eat Smart, Move More initiatives; new chapters will be added as we add initiatives.
  • We participated in an audioconference on best practices in campus-based wellness programs.
  • We signed up to work on at least one of four subcommittees: publicity, data-gathering, events and programs, and partnerships.
  • We are beginning a campus inventory of policies, programming and environmental supports for workplace wellness in consultation with our  Way to Health II partners.

Goal #2:  Building campus awareness of and participation in wellness activities

  • We designed a program web site and announced it to the campus community; a central feature is our inventory of health and wellness activities and sources of information (see Information and Activities page).
  • We completed a faculty and staff survey on program needs and wants.
  • We decided to email the campus community each time we post new activities/opportunities on the website.
  • We scheduled four low-cost health screenings (in cooperation with our Mission Hospitals partners) including blood and lifestyle profiles (dates on main page).
  • We entered multiple four-person teams in Mission Hospitals' Lighten Up 4 Life weight loss challenge.
  • We scheduled four free healthy cooking demonstrations with a representative from the Cancer Project (dates on main page).
  • We added a schedule of events through Downtown on the Move to the web site (see main page).

Goal #3:  Developing partnerships with other wellness programs and initiatives in the community, the region, and the state

  • We established a collaboration with Mission Hospitals' health screening program, Know Your Numbers.
  • We established a collaboration with the Healthy Buncombe Coalition program, Downtown on the Move.
  • We agreed to be one of the 12 NC campuses participating in UNC-Chapel Hill's Way to Health II, a 5 year, grant-funded study of weight loss among college and university personnel beginning Fall semester, 2008.

Goal #4:  Earning recognition as a model workplace wellness program

  • We have identified the WELCOA (Wellness Council of America) benchmarks for earning a well workplace designation.
    • Senior Level Management Support
    • Cohesive Wellness Team
    • Data Collection
    • Operating Plan
    • Programs and Interventions
    • Supportive Environments
    • Evaluation
  • Our program advisor developed a 5-step process for reaching these benchmarks; we note the following progress on each step.
    • Getting Organized:  Established representative committee with designated chairpersons; set up regular meetings; wrote mission statement; completed orientation to Well Workplace; received visible senior management endorsement
    • Assessing Needs:  Assessed employee needs, interest and "readiness to change"; in process of assessing environments & policies
    • Designing Programs:  In process of developing calendar of events/timeline, activities & strategies for goal(s) accomplishment, budget allocation structure, and identifying resources, barriers & obstacles
    • Implementing Programs:  Posted information about regular activities and programs on web site; scheduling and advertising special programs (e.g. health risk assessment, healthy cooking demonstration); in process of tracking employee participation in programs
    • Measuring Results:  Beginning discussions of how to evaluate impact and success of program
